Keeping a schedule is a great way to fend off the temptation of procrastination, but it has many other advantages for students as well.
Be More Productive
There’s nothing that improves productivity as well as a schedule. When you’re looking at everything that you need to accomplish in the next week, month, or semester, you’re bound to be more efficient because you know you don’t want to be stuck with everything last minute. You can jump right from task-to-task instead of thinking you have more free time than you really do. At the end, you’ll probably find that you’ve accomplished so much that you can easily relax.
Remember Deadlines
When you’re working on one thing, it can be so easy to forget about another. You don’t want to be pulling all nighters studying only to remember that you forgot to write a paper that was due the next day. You can highlight your deadlines on your schedule so that you have a clear vision of how much you need to accomplish before they arrive. Then, you can decide whether to do your projects all in one go, or a little at a time.
Have Peace of Mind
Does the phrase, “there aren’t enough hours in the day” ring true to you? You might think you have a lot to do and not enough time to get it done, but setting a schedule gives you the peace of mind of knowing that your assignments won’t be late, you won’t miss sleep, and you won’t forget to do anything.
Set Goals
The great thing about schedules is that they double as goals. It’s easy to be thrown off-course when it comes to achieving something. You can allot time to tasks that will help you to achieve a long-term goal, like being able to run a half-marathon by the end of the year, as well as tasks that accomplish short-term goals, like finishing this week’s homework assignments.
Enjoy More Free Time
It sounds a bit backwards, since many people think they procrastinate because they don’t want to spend their free time doing work. But if you think about it, when you procrastinate, you’ve got assignments and to-dos hanging over your head, making it difficult to truly enjoy your free time. If you set a schedule and stick to it, you know you’ll have everything you need to do done by a specified time. This way, you don’t waste your free time worrying about what you should be doing.
Recognize when you’re Unproductive
It’s sometimes hard to acknowledge when we’re not using our time wisely. For example, people who attend o
nline schools don’t have in-person meetings with teachers to hold them accountable. People who work two jobs spend the two hours in-between shifts doing nothing. If you have a schedule to stick to, you’ll know what to do and what to avoid. If you are unable to finish things in a certain period of time, you’ll be able to pinpoint what, exactly, distracted you and avoid those distractions.
